  •  The United States has reached another grim milestone today as Deaths from COVID-19 have surpassed 500,000. In a speech to the nation today, President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris held a candlelight vigil today to honor those who died as a result of this pandemic. In a speech, Biden  said Americans should “remember those we lost and remember those we left behind” and that the only way we fight this is if we fight as “one people”. 


  •  In Myanmar, hundreds of thousands have taken to the streets in a general strike in order to defy the military, which had overthrown the government three weeks ago. On February 1st, the Burmese Military orchestrated a coup and detained President Aung San Suu Kyi over alleged electoral fraud. The protestors have defied curfews and have engaged in a general strike. Authorities warned the protests could turn deadly, as three people have already been killed by the state. The coup and crackdown have prompted international outrage, as nations demand their democracy be restored and the release of President San Suu Kyi 


  • In Sports, the Washington Wizards have won their fifth straight game defeating the Los Angeles Lakers in a game that went to Overtime. Star Players Bradley Beal and Russell Westbrook combined for 65 points and 15 assists to come back from 17 down to beat the Lakers, who have struggled since the loss of Star Forward Anthony Davis and Point Guard Dennis Schroeder. 


  • Seattle Mariners President Kevin Mather has resigned today after comments he made about players caused controversy on social media last night. On February 5, Mather addressed the Bellevue Breakfast Rotary Club and mocked his players inability to speak English. Team Chairman John Stanton said he was “extremely disappointed” when he heard about Mather’s comments. Mather had been employed by the Mariners since 1996, and had served as the teams President since 2014.
